The Redondo lot is a popular place to park for mountain bike rides on the old roads in the open space lands. A more direct access to the tide pools and the sandy beach below the resort can be found at Pelican Point Beach. At lower tides you can walk south to the Half Moon Bay Tide Pools at Miramontes Point below the Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay Resort. It’s possible to walk north on the sandy beach all the way to Half Moon Bay State Beach from here. Bring sturdy shoes to hike down with as flip flops would be risky. Look for sea urchins, anemones, hermit crabs, and numerous other sea critters at this coveted Northern California tide pool hot spot. If you head north on the dirt trail from the parking area you’ll find a route that isn’t as steep as the ones right at the parking lot where erosion has made them dangerous. The Fitzgerald Marine Reserve consists of a three-mile stretch of beach, tide pool habitat, marsh, erosive bluffs, clifftop trails, as well as cypress and eucalyptus forests. After you park in the lot above the bluff, you’ll have to find a path to the beach as there isn’t one designated descent. The Reserve is popular with school and community groups for its educational value. The parking lot is located at the end of Redondo Beach Road off Highway 1 and is clearly signed. This Half Moon Bay Beach is one of the less crowded ones within the city, which makes parking spaces easier to come by as well. It is accessible from Highway 1 via Younge Avenue and awaits your arrival with miles of soft sand. Dunes Beachĭunes Beach is one of the northern beaches of Half Moon Bay State Beach. If you’re planning a weekend in Redondo Beach, you can expect to indulge in outdoor activities on the Wavecrest Trail like horseback riding, hiking, and dog walking. As birdwatchers know, this is an amazing place to catch our avian fellows in their natural habitat, like Northern harriers, white-tailed kites, and American kestrels. Right behind Redondo Beach is where you’ll find the Wavecrest Open Space, the single most important site for wintering raptors on the San Mateo Coast. From Hwy 1, turn toward the ocean on California Avenue. This area is also quite convenient, as you can walk to Half Moon Bay State Beach if you wish to explore more beaches. The tidepools are located at 200 Nevada Ave (where it meets Lake Street), Moss Beach CA 94038. Like most tide pools, this spot is only exposed at low tides. The second option is at Redondo Beach where you walk south. You will come across many trails perfect for exploring, eroded bluffs along the long sandy beach, and a reef for tide-pooling. The first is the closest at Pelican Point Beach where you must walk north on the beach to find the tide pools. Francis Beach, otherwise known as the main hub of Half Moon Bay State Beach, is located on 95 Kelly Avenue.
